About the Initiative

Araneae Poloniae is a country-wide scientific initiative created within the Polish Biodiversity Information Network (KSIB), in cooperation of the University of Warsaw and the Museum and Institute of Zoology PAS.

Aims and scope of activities

Our goal is to create a complete and up-to-date source of knowledge on spider fauna of Poland. We use all available documented information on distribution and biology of the species. The main sources are scientific papers, specimens in collections and photographs documenting observations. The results are available by the database Biodiversity Map and as standard publications.

The Database

The first step was digitization of the Catalogus Faunae Poloniae (KFP), Part XXXIII, no. 16, published in 1971 by the Museum and Institute of Zoology PAS, written by prominent Polish arachnologists, Prof. Jerzy Prószyński and Prof. Wojciech Staręga. Its transformed content became a cornerstone for further steps and is presented at this page. The second part is to incorporate the data into the Biodiversity Map project database, which facilitates updates and enrichment with new data BioMap Database (simplified from Biodiversity Map).
